Does New Mexico require uninsured or underinsured motors coverage for auto? (Rio Rancho, NM)

Does New Mexico require uninsured or underinsured motors coverage for auto?

The only requirement to drive a vehicle in the state of New Mexico is liability insurance with coverages of 25,000 bodily injury per person, 50,000 per accident, and 10,000 property damage. Therefore, uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist is not required.

However, in 2024, 24.9% of the people that were driving were driving uninsured. It is a state law that you must have that liability insurance, but you do not have to carry uninsured motorist coverage. So if you get hit by someone who’s uninsured, we highly recommend that you do look into carrying some uninsured underinsured motorist coverage.
